A Throwback to Old Key West
The whole commercial shrimping industry is starting to disappear from the area, largely due to the modernization of the shrimping fleet, the advent of flash freezing, and the ability of the fleet to be able to offload their catch at locations not quite as expensive as Key West. However, it is still possible to enjoy some incredible deals on the best seafood you will ever experience. |
Whether you want to barter a case of Old Milwaukee's finest for 20 lbs. of jumbo shrimp, or relax at our throwback to the old Key West, the waterfront Hogfish Bar and Grill, you'll enjoy your visit to Key West. With a view of the commercial fleet on one side, the marina on the other, and fresh Key West pink shrimp served up for $7.95 a pound lunch is sure to be memorable. The namesake "Killer Grilled Hogfish Sandwich" is pretty incredible as well. After lunch a stroll down the docks is always a good way to walk off all that food. |
The captains on the commercial boats always have some interesting stories to tell, and there are some very colorful characters to be found. The more adventurous may book a reef or backcountry trip from the charter boats, while others may elect to browse thru Joe O'Connell's incredible Art and Antiques Gallery, truly the most spectacular on the island, (by appointment only 305-304-0524). Quite often you will find local artist Tobias McGregor relaxing on the guitar or keyboards, or putting some finishing touches on one of his Key West paintings. I love the shrimp boats paintings; they're just so real. He has CDs available for $12 (Toby at 305-292-8364) if you want to take a bit of Key West back home with you. At the end of the dock, past the custom woodworking and cabinet shops you will find Michael Martin, Coppersmith, and along the way you will see numerous examples of his handiwork, along with an assortment of dogs, cats, iguanas, ospreys, and manatees. His skill is limited only by your imagination. It's fun to check out.
